Property Maintenance Violations

The City of Snellville Property Maintenance Ordinance (Zoning Ordinance Article 17) requires adherence to certain minimum property maintenance requirements. The ordinance was adopted on June 21, 1999 in order to promote and protect the public health, safety, convenience, order, and general welfare of City citizens. The ordinance applies to all structures and premises within the City limits.

Fences and walls are required to be in a structurally sound condition and in good repair. Fences must be free from loose or rotting materials and must have braces and supports that are attached and fastened in accordance with common building practices.

Premises and exterior property which contain a habitable space or business must be maintained free from grass, weeds, or uncultivated vegetation in excess of 12 inches in height. This includes all rank vegetative growth, such as kudzu, poison ivy, jimsonweed, burdock, ragweed, thistle, cocklebur, dandelion, plants of obnoxious odors, or other similarly unsightly vegetative growths.

Junk vehicles are not permitted on any premise or public street within the City limits. A junk vehicle is defined as a vehicle, automobile, truck, van, or trailer of any kind or type that is wrecked, dismantled, partially dismantled, stripped, partially stripped, inoperative, abandoned, and/or one which does not have a valid license plate attached thereto. The definition of junk vehicles also includes any amount or type of vehicle part. If a resident is in the process of reconditioning a vehicle for their own personal use, a maximum of two (2) junk vehicles may be kept at their residence provided they are kept within a fully enclosed building. An open carport is not considered a fully enclosed building. Junk vehicle violations on private property are handled by the City Code Enforcement Officer. Junk vehicle violations on public streets are handled by the City Police Department, which may be reached at (770) 985-3555.

All code violations are prosecuted in Municipal Court and are subject to a penalty of up to $1,000 and/or 60 days in jail per violation. To report code violations, please contact Jason Thompson, City Planner, at (770) 985-3518 or jthompson@snellville.org.
