History

The City of Snellville was incorporated in 1923 by Gladstone Snell, the nephew of one of the two founders, Thomas Snell, and James Sawyer.  In 1879, Tom and James opened a mercantile business on the SW corner of current US 78 and GA 124 then in 1882-83, the successful entrepreneurs further established Snellville as a retail center with the opening of their rock store on the east side of GA 124.  The very successful merchants took in as much as $500 a day from customers that came from distant communities to buy supplies.  Snellville continues the dream and historical entrepreneurial energy creating a distinct place of opportunity, growth, and engagement for the community.

The Grove at Towne Center is the largest project the City of Snellville has ever undertaken.  The concept of a downtown district took root in the late 1990s with a city study being performed in 2003.  City officials kept the dream alive in their imaginations and on paper over the last 20 years.  Groundbreaking for the project occurred in March 2021 and completion is expected Fall of 2024.
