Oak Road to be closed for Towne Green construction

SNELLVILLE – A portion of Oak Road will be closed April 2-10 in an effort to make pedestrian access to the Towne Green safer.

The closure will coincide with Gwinnett County Public Schools' Spring Break and will allow for the building of a raised and lighted crosswalk. Oak Road will be closed from the entrance of City Hall to Highway 78. The City Hall entrance should remain open a majority of the time.

"The road is being closed to provide the workers with the safest construction environment and to provide the contractor with the best opportunity to provide the city with the fastest and best construction solution," Economic Development Director Eric Van Otteren said. "We have discussed a couple of different options to closing the road. Based on worker safety and construction processes, closing the road is the best option."

Police Chief Roy Whitehead said people should avoid Oak Road as much as possible and are asked to use Clower Street as it will remain open during this construction period.

The construction is part of the Towne Green renovations in front of City Hall which will upgrade the space used for festivals and the Farmers' Market. The Towne Green project is scheduled to be completed by May 1.
